Neural Tissue Mr. Rick Knowles Anatomy and Physiology Liberty Senior High School

Neural Tissue Also known as nerve tissue. Conduction of electrical impulses 98% located in brain and spinal cord Two Types of Cells

1. Neurons Neurons- over 1 m in length; unable to divide. Conducts electrical impulses from one region to another. Has a cell body- soma with nucleus and organelles.

Neurons

Neuron Extending from soma are branching processes-dendrites- receive information, usually from other neurons. Also from the soma is a single axon that carry information to synaptic terminals. Synaptic terminals make contact with other cells.

2. Neuroglia Supporting cells for neurons. Provide a supporting framework for neural tissue. Supply nutrients. Perform phagocytosis.
