London Region – 16 th February 2011 Profiling the CPD needs of Learning Support Staff Enhancement of Learning Support

Profiling the CPD Needs of Support Staff An outcome of the original research Identify gaps in training Make CPD more relevant Use resources more effectively

Enhancement of Learning Support Profiling the CPD Needs of Support Staff “Indeed this lack of relevance of some professional development programmes was identified as a common barrier. As an interviewee suggested, quite simply, “ “Where there is a problem with the relevance of the training for LSAs, include LSAs in the team”

Enhancement of Learning Support Profiling the CPD Needs of Support Staff “Without a whole organisational approach, with clearly identified roles and responsibilities training is likely to be poorly targeted and lack impact”

Enhancement of Learning Support

What do we need to do? Understand the “what and why of current performance” Design the CPD system against demand – demand from staff and learners

Enhancement of Learning Support Profiling the CPD Needs of Support Staff A lot of training available but it was more difficult to target it effectively. In the school sector NAPTA had developed an online tool which can pin point individual training needs. Once gaps are identified individuals link with locally based training opportunities, many of which take place in their own work environment. Resources go further and have greater impact.

Enhancement of Learning Support Profiling the CPD Needs of Support Staff What is the Profiling Tool? Online Self Evaluation System set against the National Occupational Standards ( NOS). A series of questions that are mapped to the NOS Takes minutes to completed An individual report highlighting areas for development College report that collates the responses for all LSAs

Enhancement of Learning Support Profiling the CPD Needs of Support Staff

Enhancement of Learning Support Profiling the CPD Needs of Support Staff How has it been Developed? In the South East Region with Treloar and Abingdon and Witney College in partnership with Pearson Piloted in 20 colleges and by nearly 300 LSAs

Enhancement of Learning Support Profiling the CPD Needs of Support Staff Using the Profiling Tool Good leadership and management is essential Celebrate what they do well and say where they need more support Not a formal assessment!! A vital first step in the development process Reports as the basis of future development

Enhancement of Learning Support Profiling the CPD Needs of Support Staff Quote from a user: “Many thanks for the PDP report – it is wonderful – really informative and very professionally presented. I am very impressed with the quality of information which it has provided and feel it will go a long way to raise the profile of my department with senior managers”
