Throughout our 75 minute class today, 900 children will die from hunger- related causes THE GEOGRAPHY OF HUNGER

DEFINING CHRONIC PERSISTENT HUNGER (CPH) Chronic hunger results from insecure food supply Affects more than 850 million people globally Results from inability to grow or purchase food Responsible for more than 90% of hunger-related deaths in developing countries Hunger and malnutrition kill more people every year than AIDS, malaria and TB combined! Women and children experience the highest rates of hunger owing to gender inequality

HUNGER TERMS Define the key terms below and provide an example to illustrate each term. See pages in Global Connections. Develop 1-2 key words that youcan use to associate with each term. 1.Famine 2.Starvation 3.Malnutrition 4.Undernutrition What connection exists between chronic hunger, malnutrition and undernutrition?

CAUSES OF CHRONIC HUNGER: A COMPLEX WEB Sketch the organizer from Fig into your notebook Add an additional example to each of the orange boxes to illustrate the cause With a partner, take turns explaining a) how the web is interconnected and b) how overpopulation figures into this complex web.

1.What patterns can you identify on the world hunger map? 2.How do these patterns connect to previous themes and issues we have studied? Explain.

GLOBAL HUNGER INDEX (GHI) Go to the International Food Policy Research Institute website and answer the following:website 1)What is the GHI and what does it track and measure? 2)What three indicators are included in the GHI? What aspects of food security does it not consider? 3)Read the first three paragraphs of the summary. What world regions are affected the most with extremely alarming and alarming levels of hunger? What factors account for these patterns?

CHRONIC PERSISTENT HUNGER: A SILENT KILLER Examine the chart on page 148. For each condition, identify the following. You may need to do additional research online. - Disease name - Causes - Disease characteristics (Impacts on the physical body) - Impacts on the social and economic development of your region/country
