Your Turn In your groups Analyze the piece of MLK Jr.’s letter Look for any example of rhetorical device Look for any examples of rhetorical appeals Be prepared to give the highlights

October 8, 2015 TSWBAT analyze a text for rhetorical devices and appeals Warm Up: 4 corners activity What is the claim in your section of the letter?

Continue working Complete the following questions 1.What rhetorical devices are prevalent in your section of the letter? 2.Provide specific example for each device/appeal? 3.What is the effect of each device/appeal?

Modernization Turn you section of the letter into MLK Jr.’s personal blog. What are the main points? What are his emotions? What is he ranting about? What is juicy stuff that he says? Who is he mad at? What does he want people to do?

October 12, 2015 TSWBAT analyze a text for tone, rhetorical devices/ strategies, and meaning in order to create their own blogs. Warm Up: How do you think authors work in rhetorical devices/strategies? Is it intentional?

Before we start the blog… Answer the following questions 1.What is the tone of your section? What text evidence supports this? 2. What is the theme of you section? Find the text to support this. 3. Make a list of words you did not understand and define them. 4. What rhetorical strategy was used most effectively? How often was it used? What was its effect on the audience? 5. What are the examples of imagery in your section of the letter ?

Directions Answer the questions regarding your section of the letter. Discuss these answers with your group. Assign each person a section of the letter to rewrite in their own words. YOU MUST USE AT LEAST ONE OF THE DEVICES/APPEALS/ STRATEGIES THAT MLK JR. USES Share everyone’s re-writes Decide on a title for you blog Decide how you are going to put all the rewrites together Write a Rough Draft

Use your answers from the questions to start writing a blog. With my SINCEREST apologies Sitting in jail gives one A LOT of time to think and even more time to pray. However, this does not fill up a day, so writing lengthy letters helps me to forget about how small and uncomfortable my jail cell is. It helps me forget about my comfortable desk. So, perhaps my thoughts regarding your statement were a bit too long. My sincerest apologies. It must be difficult to read such a long letter in the midst of your busy day. My sincerest apologies if you think that I have overstated the racial problems facing our communities. My sincerest apologies to the those in fear drenched communities if I have understated your plight.

While the Rough Draft is Being composed Write you vocabulary words on the chart paper Write a list of your favorite examples of rhetorical devices used (on your own paper)

Compose your final draft Write your final draft on the construction paper. Other group members: Write your favorite uses of imagery and draw a picture to accompany it
