Sir George Cayley was born in 1733 in Scarborough, Yorkshire. As a boy he was interested in how things fly and was determined to solve the problem of human flight. When he was ten years old two Frenchmen invented a hot air balloon but George knew that something better would one day be invented. He wanted to be the one to invent it. On August 9 th 1896, the glider that Otto Lilienthal was piloting stalled and went into a nosedive as its wing broke off. There was nothing to protect him and he died the next day of a broken spine.
