 Why Germany?  Do I need to speak fluent German?  What does it cost?  What are the options?  Which one(s) are best for me?  What are the next steps?  Whom can I contact for more information? Overview of Presentation

 Business: Germany is the USA’s largest European trading partner, the anchor country of the Euro and the largest European trading partner of most Eastern European and Asian countries.  The global career: Knowledge of German culture increases your job opportunities with German and foreign companies in your own country and abroad. Proficiency in German helps you to function productively for an employer with global business connections.  Tourism and hospitality industry: Tourists from German-speaking countries travel far and wide, and are the world’s biggest spenders when on holiday. They appreciate to be looked after by staff and tour guides experienced in the German culture, and German hospitality schools are well-known for their high-quality graduates.  Science and Research: Germany is the third largest contributor to research and development and offers research fellowships to scientists from abroad. It is also the industrialized country which devotes the highest percentage of its GDP to research and innovation.  Communication: Developments in media, information and communication technology require multicultural communication. A wide range of important websites are in German and worldwide, Germany is ranked number 5 in terms of annual publication of new books. Time spent in Germany on work or study visits therefore offer\ you extended access to information.  Travel: Make the most of your travels not only in German-speaking countries, but in many other European countries where German culture is widely known and appreciated, especially in Eastern Europe.  Literature, music, art and philosophy: German is the language of Goethe, Kafka, Mozart, Bach and Beethoven. For study in Germany only  Some fellowships require German proficiency, many do not.  Undergraduate + graduate options  Full-year, semester-long and summer  Varying dates and deadlines – see which interest you and ask us for more information! 

DAAD Undergraduate Options Undergraduate Scholarships Scholarships for 4 to 10 months of study, thesis research or an internship for students in any academic field. German proficiency preferred but not required. Study Scholarship Scholarships for graduating Seniors to complete one academic year of study or a full graduate degree program in Germany. German proficiency required. RISE - Research Internships in Science and Engineering Summertime internships with German doctoral students at universities and research institutions--no German required! RISE professional Undergrads who are DAAD alumni can apply for these summer internships with German companies. University Summer Course Grant Summer courses at German universities to help build your language skills while studying anything from film to politics to engineering. internXchange An 11-week summer program in Berlin for American journalism and communications students. Advanced-intermediate German needed. Study and Internship Program (SIP) A full academic semester of study abroad at one of the UAS7 universities in Germany followed by a one-semester professional internship experience in a company or research institute in Germany. German language skills preferred but not required. German Studies Research Grant Funding for research in the US or Germany in all areas of contemporary German Studies. EMGIP - Bundestag Internship Two months in the German parliament for students who are fluent in German.

DAAD Graduate Options Study Scholarship + Study Scholarship for Artists, Musicians, Actors and Dancers (10-month stipend to study at any German university; renewable, can be used to pursue a full Master’s Degree, max. 4 semesters. Applicants in arts, humanities, social sciences must have good command of German) Research Grant (10-month stipend to pursue Ph.D. research; renewable, can be used to pursue full Ph.D. in Germany within 4 years. Applicants in arts, humanities, social sciences must have good command of German) University Summer Course Grant (4-week stipends to study German language) RISE professional (1.5 – 6 month stipends for professional internships) Intensive Language Courses in Germany (stipends for 8-week German languages courses, not granted to German language, literature or translation students) Intern Exchange (8- week summer program for journalists with intermediate German) German Studies Research Grant (1-2 months, for M.A. students in German Studies) Summer Law School (for students in 2 nd or 3 rd year of law school, German skills preferred)

 U.S. government’s premiere international scholarship  “To promote cross-cultural interaction and foster mutual understanding through engagement in the community” through cultural and educational exchanges  Research, teaching, study, special programs  Must be a U.S. citizen with bachelor’s degree  Proficiency in German  Apply senior year  Round-trip transportation, language courses, tuition, books, research allowance, and health insurance  Deadlines:  Campus: August  National: October 20

Types of Fulbright Grants to Germany Research/Study Grant  GERMANY: 80 Awards/299 applicants in 2015  AUSTRIA: 26 Awards/58 applicants in 2015  Independent research, study, or creative and performing arts projects abroad English Teaching Assistantships:  GERMANY: 140 Awards/381 applicants in 2015  AUSTRIA: None  8-12 months  hours a week helping to teach English and U.S. culture in the classroom  Remaining time spent on a community-focused project

Congress-Bundestag Youth Exchange for Young Professionals (CBYX) (  10-month work/study (+ language program)  Beginning to intermediate German  75 Americans chosen yearly  Deadline: December 1 each year

 9-12 month program (extra 3 months for language study  Business, law, political science, policy fields  Work in selected German government ministries and agencies or the Parliament itself  No prior German needed  Stipend of 2,000 Euros/month, airfare  Deadline: October 15 Robert Bosch Fellowship

 March – July each year  Intern with member of German Parliament, take classes at one of 3 Berlin universities  Interest in German/European politics, strong German skills  9 interns out of 89 selected in 2014  Deadline: June 30 each year IPS (International Parliamentary Scholarship)

 Questions to think about:  What do I want to be doing in 5 years?  How will a stay in Germany enhance this?  How long do I want/need to stay?  Do I want to study/research, work, learn the language?  What did I most/least enjoy about my study abroad?  Do I need to learn German (or refresh my knowledge)?  What are graduates of these fellowships doing? Which ones are best for me?

 Research the scholarships you are interested in online  Make note of dates and deadlines  Update your resume to include all your:  educational experiences (teaching, research, awards/honors)  Inter/multicultural experiences (study abroad, local)  Focus on personal statement- why Germany?  Take a semester or more of German if necessary  Contact alumni of programs you want to apply for What are the next steps?
