CSN1 4 Aprile 06L.Mandelli1 Stato Generale di Atlas Aprile 06 Sottosistemi –Toroidi –Solenoide –Mu Barrel –Mu EC –LAr e Tiles –TRT –SCT –Pixel –LV1 –DAQ –RRB –Conclusioni

L.Mandelli2 Barrel Toroid-1 The operations are following the sequence given in September without relevant problems: The Toroid was predeformed by 30mm. After release of Jacks (830t)  18mm. After assembly of Mu stations (350t)  25-28mm. ok (-2/-5mm- ~ ) Interconnections of the cryoring completed.

L.Mandelli3 Barrel Toroid-2 Pumping started. Check leaks. When mBar Switch to diffusion pumps ( 8x2) to reach mBar end April Proximity cryogenic connected Clean Up Cavern Cooling down and first current tests in May Full test in June. Memo: it was Feb-March (+ 4 m)

L.Mandelli4 The assembly of the EC toroids is done at CERN in H191. Several problems have been hit during assembly of ECT-A: The cooling lines of the thermal shield end plates were leaking ( do you remind Zanon...?)  3m delay The 6K termal shield had to be redone  1m delay The top plate of the service turret was leaking and has to be repaired  1m delay End Cap Toroids Now Cryostat open ready for cold mass insertion Transport to H180 ( parking!) and cool down to 80K in June Installation in UX15 in Sept (it was May +4m) Cool down in Nov. ECT-C will follow in Dec, cool down in March

L.Mandelli5 connections Central Solenoid Coil assembled with the LAr cryostat. B=2T Moved in its final position in Oct 05 –Next Connect the coil to its services: He, I, controls: -Connect the chimney to the coil and the control dewar -Vacuum and cooling down with LAr -Test coil Field map when Calo EC “in” : end June

L.Mandelli6 Mu spectrometer EC ( Barrel is left to following talk) staged Big wheel 1 MDT 3 TGC Inner/Small Wheel EO Wall Wheel

L.Mandelli7 EC Wheels The assembly of the “ Big Wheels” is the most challenging part ( 1MDT; 3 TGC) Remind that wheels are divided in sectors and sectors are assembled and tested in B180 and then lowered in UX15. There are 16x2 sectors of MDT and 12x6 sectors of TGC. MDT: 8 MDT Sectors (25%) are assembled and tested. End forseen in October 06. The MDT Inner and the EO wheels should not present problems

L.Mandelli8 TGC ( 6 wheels- 72 sectors ) TGC-1C and TGC-1A well advanced but at the nominal rate assembly (not yet reached) will finish in July 07 Not acceptable. Increase technical team (done). Open a new (3°) assembly line once MDT are terminated. This will bring the assembly of C side in Nov 06 and A side in April 07. The EC Mu is time wise CRITICAL. Furthermore their installation will depend on the real schedule of the other subsystems ( ECT, etc) EC-Wheels-2

L.Mandelli9 Barrel Calorimeters: Successes and problems Barrel: Tiles & LAr:  Moved at the IP end of October. Position < 1mm to nominal in all directions  Installation of services: cabling, cryolines, piping (including ID) well advanced  Assembly and commissioning of FE and BE electronics well advanced  Cool down of LAr will start 10th of April.  The cool down will take 6w  Barrel should be cold (end) of May and will stay cold for the next 10 years (at least) !!

L.Mandelli10 EC LAr and EB EC-C LAr EC-C lowered at side C on the EB in Dec 05. EC-C assembly finished 10mm Z dispacement between EB and LAr. Installation of services started Moved to det open position end Feb ( Big Wheel tooling installation) EC-A LArEC-A moved to SX1 Jan 06 Lowering in the pit forseen in 20th April 06 CRYO SC GAP SC MBTSC (16 to be placed on HM shield) 60/64 64/64

L.Mandelli11 FEB nearing completion but lack of one type of preamps recently discovered (25 Ohm, 5mA). Reason: use in TB and tests, change of type by the FCAL ( 10mA  5mA) Controller and Calibration boards are in full production. LVPS: A lot of recent progress on the LV PS Four final modules under long test. Retrofitting of all modules (L) started. Be optimistic ! However commissioning was painful. Getting critical. Interaction with TC needed to finalize implementation of forced air cooling (piping..) HV PS situation remains a concern (running channels problem). Temporary solution to for the commissioning period available More difficult to evaluate whether existing modules can be usable on a long period. In parallel technical test of modules from other vendors started. Back-end electronics: Production finished except additional RODs. Installation of barrel and EMEC RODs in USA15 finished LAR Point of attentions:

L.Mandelli12 Hadron Tiles Calorimeter Front-end electronics commissioning: very low component failure ( 0.2 %) Back-end electronics : validation 90% done, ~ 50% installed in the pit. DCS: Control of crate PS and LVPS installed and running in the pit. Finger Low Voltage power supplies : Digital noise increase of 30% with non gaussian tails respect to the use of a commercial one. Could impact ptmiss tail and mu identification. Good progress in understanding and recovering. Incorrect SW procedure of operating LVPS system resulted in two superdrawer damages. Repaired. One-two weeks to implement a temporary solution, one-two months for the final one. Production ongoing. HV tested but not operational. Online and offline tools: ready and used daily for commissioning EB-A starting in April

L.Mandelli13 ID: TRT and SCT Very good progress from October Barrel: TRT-Leaks problem on TRT cooling circuit manyfold due to poor brazing. Complete repacement of all manyfold. Work well advanced (8/32) SCT-Leaks on 3 (the first ones installed)/44 exhaust joints of the cooling loop. Fix all 44 with internal peek insert and internal and external epoxi qualified resistent to C 3 F 8 and radiation. SCT- Thermal enclosure added and integrated Insertion of SCT in TRT accomplished on 17 February with success Solder joint

L.Mandelli14 Insertion 17 Feb. The cantilever was finally lowered few mm and the SCT is now supported by the TRT SCT-TRT clearance very small (~1mm per side) Overall process longer then scheduled (end-Dec  mid-Feb) due to leak repair.

L.Mandelli15 Barrel-ID Ready for Integration: Early June. Commissioned: End September

L.Mandelli16 ID: TRT and SCT Barrel Ready for installation: early June Commissioned: October EC-C All 9 SCT disks are at CERN and will be integrated with the TRT wheels end April Ready for installation early October Commissioned end December EC-A 6/9 SCT wheels assembled at Nikhef ( it was 3/6) in October All TRT wheel are stacked and at CERN. Integration SCT-TRT in June Ready for installation end November Commissioned end February 07

L.Mandelli17 Present status and next steps The assembly of ATLAS proceeds along the planned lines: –The BT is assembled – Cryogenics, connections, controls are almost completed and vacuum pumping has started. Cold in June –The Barrel calorimeter is at the IP, Commisioning has started. LAr cryogenic advanced, Vaccum pumping started. Cold in June ( forever!!) –EC-C at the detector open position. Services installation well advanced. –Lowering in the pit and assembly of EC-A will start in April. –TRT and SCT Barrel assembled at surface. Ready for installation in June –Assembly of the Mu Barrel Chamber has started. A large fraction should be assembled for August. The fraction will depend on the interferences with the ID, the LArEC cryogenic and the assembly of the Mu EC.

L.Mandelli18

L.Mandelli19 RRB April 06 Final documents received last week ( 30-03) Some details worth to be studied in depth, but the main points seem to me the following:

L.Mandelli20 Budget 05 – CERN – RRB CP-CC-C&I Reasons: Delay in program and payments

L.Mandelli21 Budget 06 Updates As a consequence of the variations in 05 budget, the constrain of the 07 budget as the final one for the staged detector, the 06 budget ( Core and CC-A) has been updated. The large fraction of the needed budget has been promised by agencies. Very optimistically the missing CP contributions, Ru+JINR (5.2), Greece(1.5); USA(1.0); China( 0.3) and also a good fraction of the promised CtC/deferrals (INFN : kCHF) are assumed as income ( Table12-13). ATLAS knows that this is optimistic. In front of a promise from agencies, pressure should be made on CERN for a loan (also in absence of pledge letters). C&I(B): ok CC(B): ok

L.Mandelli22 MOF AB Requested Oct Received (*) Payment  Cumulative (*) Russia; JINR; Greece;

L.Mandelli23 MOF- 07 First proposal. To be analysed and looked at by the groups ( Scrutiny and IB’s) No positive/negative surprises ABTotal With power INFN (11%) in kind INFN

L.Mandelli24 Conclusions In front of many successes and progresses one has to recognize and face at present about 4 months delay. At present the beam pipe closure is foreseen in June 07, the last installation of the EO Mu Chambers in August 07 Mu-EC and pixel look to be the most critical items However it is quite impressive to note that in (late) autumn 06 ATLAS will have the central part ( BT, solenoid, Calo, ID, Mu ) installed and under the phase3 commissioning (CR). EC’s will follow Financial situation requires attention, but I cannot believe that possible problems at the few % level of the detector value could be a reason for a delay.
