Class 1, January 26, 2016 Lesson 5.1: Numbers, Numbers, Everywhere

 By the end of this lesson, you should understand that: ◦ Quantitative literacy empowers people by giving them tools to think for themselves, to ask intelligent questions of experts, and to confront authority confidently. ◦ Quantitative reasoning is important for decision making in our democratic society.

 By the end of this lesson, you should be able to: ◦ Find your own examples of how numbers are reported in the media, and consider the mathematical skills necessary to make sense of those numbers.

 Main ideas in the lesson: ◦ Quantitative literacy skills help us to understand the numbers we are confronted with in today’s society. ◦ The ability to interpret numbers reported in the media and use them to make informed decisions is crucial to the success of our democratic society.

 Connections to the 8 course goals: 1. Make sense of problems and persevere in solving them 2. Reason abstractly and quantitatively.
