THE REASON JUNETEENTH IS CELEBRATED Juneteenth is a holiday that celebrates the emancipation of Texas slaves. This celebration began in Galveston,Texas on June 19 th,1865

THE NEWS For the slaves the news came 2 ½ years later after the issuance Major General Gordon beared the great news to the slaves. Emancipation was signed by President Abraham Lincoln

THE CELEBRATIONS In the beginning most celebrations took place around rivers,creeks, and church grounds Activities included fishing,barbecue,and baseball

THE DEPRESSION In the 1990’s some kids were home schooled and learned about the celebration. The schoolbooks replaced the family customs and traditions.

THE COMEBACK Juneteenth resurged in the 1950’s and 1960’s during the civil rights movement Texas proclaimed Juneteenth an official state holiday on January 1, 1980
