And avoiding the Pitfalls

“if done correctly E-learning can be a very effective tool for organizations that need to improve staff development or provide training in new products and processes”. (Stockley, 2006) What does it take to create a successful e-learning program? Faculty

“The faculty must accept the responsibility now for shaping distance learning and, in the process; it should also attempt to reclaim ground lost in the development of programs for returning students”. (Freenberg, 1999) Ingredients for a successful e-learning program Faculty Fully qualified to teach Interested in doing so on-line The Leadership Expectations

2 ways to contribute to raising the student learning outcomes 1.engaged, meaningful learning with collaboration involving challenging and real-life tasks 2.technology as a tool for learning, communication, and collaboration Ingredients for a successful e-learning program (Dowling, 2001 p.1)

Active Simulations

Determining the type of E-Learning Program Collaboration Tools Blogs File sharing Voice over IP(VOIP) Web conferencing Wikis Instant Messaging hyper linking Most common part of any online experience Most difficult to maintain Costs the learners too much time to filter the unrelated information Evaluations Assessment questions Multiple choice questions exams

“Successful learning environments should also provide intrinsic motivation by promoting challenges, piquing curiosity, and enabling active participation”. (Grissino, 2004) the nature of innovation We must continue to find innovative ways of keeping our learners engaged. Use various approaches to capture the learners attention Interactive gameplay Roleplaying Simulations Should only be used as tools to assist the facilitator and not to babysit the learner

Online learning is not just simply a cookie-cutter type program. Questions?
