Why AMES was developed … Audience: Higher education faculty in mathematics Capture the current state of K-12 mathematics education in Texas from the high school and higher education faculty perspective Explore commonalities in the issues faced by both Propose steps that faculty might take with public school educators to prepare all students for success in mathematics after high school.

Why AMES was developed … Faculty report that first year higher ed students often fall into one of the following categories: Students who have not taken math in their final high school year and are ill-prepared for college math Students who have taken 4 years of high school math but not at sufficient rigor to prepare them for success in college mathematics Students who have successfully completed 4 years of rigorous math in high school, including AP, and are well-prepared for college math courses

Goal: Decrease the number of students in the first and second groups and increase the number of students in the third group. To do this will require college faculty to become more directly involved in students’ high school mathematics preparation. What are the implications for us?

The Texas High School Mathematics Program Challenges are many and include… Rigorous curriculum standards defined by the state (TEKS) New graduation requirements (2005) State-mandated testing (TAKS) District-mandated curriculum changes Increased pressure to teach more students more mathematics Changes in format of the instructional day Emphasis on educating all students, including those with special needs
