Writing is an essential skill because... It is a part of nearly every class or job. Almost everything you will do at college and work is related to your writing ability. It is the most valuable students and employees can have.

FOUR (4) Keys to Effective Writing Identify your audience. Establish your purpose. Formulate your message. Select appropriate style and tone.

Logos, Ethos, Pathos or the Rhetorical Triangle

Identify your Audience Anti-Smoking Campaign

Establish your Purpose Ask yourself, “WHY you are writing?” Get to the point right away – state your goal clearly.

Formulate your Message Scope: How much information you give about key details. Details: The key points readers/audience needs to know.

Style HOW something is written rather than WHAT is written. Construction of paragraphs Length/Patterns of sentences Word choice Determines how well you communicate with your audience. Tone Expresses attitude toward a topic, and toward your audience. Formal & Impersonal (Scientific Report) Informal & Personal ( to friend) Reflects the image you wish to project.

Ethical Writing Choosing language that is right, fair, honest, and complete. Reflects on your reputation and character.

Ethical Requirements Be competent. Be honest. Maintain confidentiality. Be loyal. Follow the chain of command. Respect others. Research and document carefully. Maintain accurate, up-to- date records.

Guidelines for Ethical Behavior Follow your conscience, and “to thine own self be true.” Be suspicious of appeals that go against your beliefs. Take responsibility for your actions. Keep others in the loop. Weigh all sides before making conclusions. Treat company or school property respectfully.
