Presentation transcript:

Mrs Smith has 2 children, at least one of which is a boy. What is the probability that the other is a boy?

Sample Space Diagrams Obj: To be able to ALL: describe the possible outcomes when rolling 2 dice MOST: assign probabilities to each outcome SOME: construct and use sample space diagrams

On your table draw your 12 piers You have to decide where you want to put your 24 people in order to try and save as many as possible! Take it in turns to roll the dice. When the dice are rolled, add the numbers together and 1 person from that pier is saved (if you have someone on that pier.) Continue for 24 rolls in total When finished, discuss with your group where you think it is best to place your tourists to get them saved!

Number left behind:___ Win/lose/draw:___ 5 eg x x x person rescued Number left behind:___ Win/lose/draw:___ Number left behind:___ Win/lose/draw:___ Number left behind:___ Win/lose/draw:___ Decide where to place your 24 people and record your setup here – marking it as shown to the side. Write down the number of tourists left after 24 rolls.

Score on dice one Score on dice two

Score on dice one Score on dice two Combined Events When two independent events take place it is useful to draw a Sample Space Diagram. The sample space diagram makes it easier to see all the possible outcomes for two events What is the probability of rolling each number? P(2)=P(3)=P(4)=P(5)= P(6)=P(7)=P(8)=P(9)= P(10)=P(11)=P(12)=

A game is played where the score on two dice are multiplied together. (a)Copy and complete the sample space diagram (b)Find P(6) (c)Find P(even number) (d)P(square number) (e)P(number less than 10)
