THE BELIEVER: HIS SUBMISSION 2:11-3:12 * Submission in the State 2:11-17 Submission in the Household 2:18-25 Submission of Our Savior 2:21-25 Submission in the Family 3:1-7 * adapted from McCalley

Submission in the Family 3:1-7 Responsibility of the Wife 3:1-6 The Declaration and Limits of Submission 3:1a The Purpose of this Submission 3:1b The Details of the Submission 3:2-4 The Pattern for the Submission 3:5-6 Responsibility of the Husband 3:7

1 In the same way, you wives, be submissive to your own husbands so that even if any of them are disobedient to the word, they may be won without a word by the behavior of their wives, 2 as they observe your chaste and respectful behavior. 3 Your adornment must not be merely external— braiding the hair, and wearing gold jewelry, or putting on dresses; 4 but let it be the hidden person of the heart, with the imperishable quality of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is precious in the sight of God.

1 In the same way, you wives, be submissive to your own husbands so that even if any of them are disobedient to the word, they may be won without a word by the behavior of their wives, in the same way - homoiōs - in like manner, likewise What does this refer to? you wives be submissive (present – continuous action) What does submissive mean? parallel verses: Eph 5:22 Wives, be subject to your own husbands, as to the Lord. Eph 5:24 But as the church is subject to Christ, so also the wives ought to be to their husbands in everything. Col 3:18 Wives, be subject to your husbands, as is fitting in the Lord

1 In the same way, you wives, be submissive to your own husbands so that even if any of them are disobedient to the word, they may be won without a word by the behavior of their wives, to your own husbands “To your own husbands” shows that the subject is not male- female relationship but husband-wife relationship. This is based on the premise that every institution must have a head. The headship of the husband is based on God’s choice, not male superiority. McCalley 1 Corinthians 11:3 But I want you to understand that Christ is the head of every man, and the man is the head of a woman, and God is the head of Christ. also see Eph 5:23 How did Christ demonstrate His submissiveness to the Father?

1 In the same way, you wives, be submissive to your own husbands so that even if any of them are disobedient to the word, they may be won without a word by the behavior of their wives, so that - hina – with a purpose that even - kai - it frequently has a climactic use, signifying the thing that is added being out of the ordinary - see John 8:14 “even” if any of them are disobedient to the word “if ” is a 1 st class condition - assumed to be true for the sake of argument lit: disobedient to the word (word of God) same idea in passages using “word of truth” - see Col 1:5

1 In the same way, you wives, be submissive to your own husbands so that even if any of them are disobedient to the word, they may be won without a word by the behavior of their wives, disobedient – apeitheō - to refuse to be persuaded or belief, to be disobedient - see 1 Pete 2:8, 1 Peter 4:17, Rom 2:8 What kind of marriage situation is being addressed here? word - logos – I. the expression of thought, (a)as embodying a conception or idea (b) a saying or statement by God or by Christ (c) discourse, speech, of instruction II. "The Personal Word," a title of the Son of God Vine

1 In the same way, you wives, be submissive to your own husbands so that even if any of them are disobedient to the word, they may be won without a word by the behavior of their wives, they may be won without a word by the behavior of their wives won - kerdainō - to gain, acquire as gain, to win; to gain over to one's side, meaning to win over to Christ – future/indicative/passive see Phil 3:8, 1 Cor 9:19-22 behavior – anastrophe - in the NT, mode of life, conduct, behavior; life, as made up of actions see 1 Peter 2:12, Heb 13:7 they will be gained through the wives conduct without a word (Interlinear) Whose life will they see in the wife?

2 as they observe your chaste and respectful behavior. as they observe – lit: having observed observe - epopteuō - to look upon or to oversee, inspect. In the NT, generally to behold, contemplate two aspects of the wife's life are being observed chaste - hagnos - pure from defilement, not contaminated - James 3:17, 1 John 3:3 respectful - phobos - reverential fear; in a moral sense, fear, reverence, respect, honor see - 1Peter 1:17, 2:17, 3:15

3 Your adornment must not be merely external — braiding the hair, and wearing gold jewelry, or putting on dresses; Your adornment must not be merely external let your adornment not be that adornment which is from without and merely external (Wuest) adornment - kosmos - a harmonious arrangement or order, then, "adornment, decoration," Obviously, Peter is not forbidding the care of hair or wearing jewelry. If this were true, he also forbids wearing clothing—clearly not his point. McCalley

3 Your adornment must not be merely external—braiding the hair, and wearing gold jewelry, or putting on dresses; Three external aspects are addressed braiding the hair - the Greek word (braiding) refers to an elaborate gathering of the hair into knots. History informs us that the Roman women of that day were addicted to ridiculous extravagance in the adornment of the hair. (Wuest) wearing gold jewelry - in the Greek text the word translated "wearing" means literally, "putting around," and here gives the picture of these wives covering their persons with a lavish, conspicuous display of jewelry. (Wuest) putting on dresses - lit: of garments - two ideas: a. fine garments (NIV) b. the frequents changing of garments 1 Timothy 2:9 Likewise, I want women to adorn themselves with proper clothing, modestly and discreetly, not with braided hair and gold or pearls or costly garments,

4 but let it be the hidden person of the heart, with the imperishable quality of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is precious in the sight of God but let it be the hidden person of the heart but let that adornment be the hidden personality in the heart (Wuest) hidden – kryptos - hidden, concealed, secret see Rom 7:22 important aspects of the hidden person imperishable - aphthartos - not liable to corruption or decay, incorruptible – 1 Peter 1:23 whose quality is being displayed?

4 but let it be the hidden person of the heart, with the imperishable quality of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is precious in the sight of God a gentle spirit Matthew 11:29 "Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and YOU WILL FIND REST FOR YOUR SOULS. a quiet spirit quiet - hēsychios - quiet, still, tranquil, undisturbed from without which is precious (of great worth) in the sight of God
