Publishing Made Easy! Theresa Nierlich CTAP Literacy Through Technology

Welcome! While we assemble, look through your materials and the new packet from tonight. See if there is a site or skill that you wanted that I forgot to include. Think about any questions you may have. This is also a good time to save any documents you may have created- send them to yourself, or save them to a jump drive.

Review Deep Questions –Develop background knowledge to encourage deeper questions –Revised Bloom’s taxonomy helps frame questions –Break the big question into smaller, researchable questions –Identify key terms and problem words for searching

Review Safe Searching –Hotlist is “safest” way- use Word, Filamentality, Ed1stop, Scholastic –Discuss evaluating websites –Use Advanced Search tools in Google –Use an index or directory –Four NETS

Review Empowering Readers –Find text at the reader’s level –Lexile.com or tool in Word –Pre, During, and After Reading Strategies –Explicitly teach non-fiction and web-based text structures –Develop content-area vocabulary

Review Critical Note-Taking –Inspiration or PowerPoint –Different structures –Frames for summaries –Deletion, GIST, Rule-Based note-taking

Review Expository Writing –Inspiration outline to paragraphs –Very structured forms –Using a Writer/Alphasmart

Tonight: Publishing Made Easy Why “publish?” Ways to publish Citations Wrap it up

Why Publish? Motivation Create an audience that guides the writing Teach importance of polishing the product Create a community of writers

PowerPoint to Publish Create a PowerPoint show to accompany the text Combines text and visual clues Can be interactive to instruct other students

My Summer Vacation I had a very busy summer. I started by taking classes on making books by hand. I learned many new book structures. Pictures from San Francisco Center for the Book

Then I took two computer classes at Stanford. I learned about making movies and using Adobe Acrobat to assemble lessons. It’s been a while since I was a college student! Hopefully I’ll be able to use those skills this year.

In August we went to the East Coast. I visited Washington D.C., and saw all of the important sites. Then Chip and I met up to go to Canada. We went to Quebec, New Brunswick, and Nova Scotia. We kayaked in the Bay of Fundy.kayaked
