Before reading...Chapter 7 What do you think the Himalayan Mountains look like? Joshua Raven describes the mountains as an ‘abode of snow’. What do you think an ‘abode of snow’ would look like? Massive, Immovable and Majestic are words used in this chapter to describe the mountains. Can you think of any others you would use? The mountains are also described as ‘challenging’ as ‘only five of its first sixteen’ climbs had been successful. How does this make you feel as the reader? Why do you think Joshua Raven has included this fact in the narrative at this point?

Mountains

Chapter 7 Nepal. The Himalayan Mountains. The Himalayan Mountain range stretches across five nations, sprinkling a hundred mountain peaks over China, India, Nepal, Pakistan and Bhutan. Caleb emerged from his tent early in the morning. It was a cool day in the mountains. He breathed in a lungful of air, and then another and stretched up to the sky. Lifting his eyes to the mountain slopes, Caleb Noble saw the ridges of snow he had left behind a few days earlier. “The abode of snow,” he stated. Himalaya is a Sanskrit name which means ‘the abode of snow’, and he liked the idea that there was a place where snow lived.

After reading... Chapter 7 How are the Himalayan Mountains described in this chapter? Did the description match your own perception or ideas? What was different? What vocabulary does Joshua Raven use to describe the mountains? What is effective about his choice of words? Use a dictionary and Thesaurus to help you understand any words you don’t know.

Research Carry out some research into this particular setting and location. Make notes on the descriptions of the Himalayan Mountains. Collect facts about the mountains that you find interesting and which stand out to you. Consider the vocabulary ‘massive, immovable and majestic’. Create your own list of vocabulary which you think describes the mountains.
