Ibrahim H. Albayrak, Hampton University Group Meeting F L, F 1, F 2 and R fundamental Structure Function Measurements on Deuterium. - These structure functions provide us important information about internal structure of nucleon, i. e. distribution of quarks and gluons inside the nucleus. Since these are fundamental measurements, they allow a variety of physics issues to be addressed, such as: ◦ Extraction of Structure Function and Moments of Neutron from this D2 data combining with existing Proton data(E94110) ◦ No neutron target exist. D2 is the simplest nuclei having neutron. 2 Physics Motivation

Structure Functions: F1, F2, FL 7 e e E E’ ν,Q 2 M W Calculable in QED Physics of interest (Nucleon Structure) Cross section is the measured quantity by the experiment. Structure functions (F1 and F2) have the information of the protons internal structure.
Ibrahim H. Albayrak, Hampton University Group Meeting Cross Section Extraction Method Monte Carlo ratio method is used to extract data cross sections: We can simulate data using a cross section model to obtain yield: And yield for the data can be written as: Taking the ratio to data and assuming that A MC = A data, yields MC ratio method: Where model is a fit to previous data (P. Bosted, M.E. Christy, Phys. Rev. C2007)
Ibrahim H. Albayrak, Hampton University Group Meeting Cross Sections (preliminary) 9 Different colors correspond to different central momentum setting of the HMS spectrometer. HMS acceptance is ±8%. Expect point to point uncertainty in ε less that 1.5% and overall normalization uncertainty less than 2%.
Ibrahim H. Albayrak, Hampton University Group Meeting 10 longitudinalTransverse Rosenbluth Separation Where: = flux of transversely polarized virtual photons = relative longitudinal flux
Ibrahim H. Albayrak, Hampton University Group Meeting L/T Separations ~ 300 L/T separations done
Ibrahim H. Albayrak, Hampton University Group Meeting R, F 1, F 2 and F L Structure Functions Structure functions F 1, F 2 and F L extracted for Q 2 = 1,2,3 and 4 GeV. Systematic errors are not included yet. They are being calculated currently.
Ibrahim H. Albayrak, Hampton University Group Meeting Moments of the Structure Functions Cornwall-Norton moments of the SFs are defined as M 1 1 gives the quark charges. M 2 2 gives the total momentum of the quarks.
Ibrahim H. Albayrak, Hampton University Group Meeting Non-Singlet Moments Non-singlet moments can be determined where f represents the nuclear corrections. Therefore measuring F 2 p, F L p, F 2 D and F L D allows to study non- singlet(valence) distributions and singlet (sea+gluon) distributions through F L together with F 2. Gluon distributions can be extracted from F L since
Ibrahim H. Albayrak, Hampton University Group Meeting Summary All detector calibrations and background subtractions are done. Preliminary L/T separations have already been done. Determination of point-to-point and absolute uncertainties are being finalized. Final extraction of cross sections being finalized. Preliminary Structure functions extracted. Extraction of the moments of the structure functions will be next. Non-Singlet moments, n-p extraction from D2 and P in transverse and longitudinal structure functions. 15
