How did the Catholic Church influence life in early medieval Europe?

 How did Christianity spread in Europe?  At the fall of Rome, Europe had many religions  400s-Christian priest named Patrick founded Christianity in Ireland  Opened churches and monasteries (religious houses) Do not chunk

 How did Christianity spread in Europe?  Patrick inspired Pope Gregory I to spread Christianity  Asked monks to become missionaries - people who are sent out to teach their religion  597, he sent 40 monks to Britain to teach Christianity  By 1050, most Western Europeans had become Catholic Christians Chunk

 Describe the role of monks and nuns  Monks provided schools and hospitals  Taught carpentry, weaving, and farming  Copied literature to help preserve books  Lived in communities headed by abbots  Women called nuns lived in convents -headed by abbesses

 What did the pope and king disagree about?  Church officials had power which caused disagreements  Kings believed church leaders should listen to them  Church leaders believed Kings should obey the church

 Describe the relationship of Pope Gregory and King Henry  Pope Gregory VII said only the pope had the power to appoint high-ranking Church officials  Made Henry IV mad as king, he always appointed officials  Gregory excommunicated Henry IV- kicked out of church and could not go to heaven Do not chunk

 What is the Concordat of Worms?  new German king and pope agreed that only the pope could choose bishops  This agreement, called the Concordat of Worms, was signed in the German city of Worms.  A concordat is an agreement between the pope and the ruler of a country.
