Sustainability & Procurement: Practical lessons from research at Cardiff Business School Dr. Anne Touboulic Prof. Helen Walker Dr. Jane Lynch

Walker, H., Seuring, S., Klassen, R. & Sarkis, J. (2014) Sustainable OM: recent trends and future directions. IJOPM, 5(3) Future research opportunities shown in RED CARBON PROCUREMENT Current and future research in Sustainable SCM Professor Helen Walker Carbon procurement is just one part of a broader research field

Key lessons Procurement is a critical boundary function to drive sustainability within and outside an organisation o Environmentally: Waste reduction, eco-friendly materials, lower energy, etc. o Socially: Support local community, fairer labour practices, minority suppliers, etc. Implementing sustainable sourcing creates the opportunity to work collaboratively internally (marketing, finance) and externally with suppliers Early involvement of suppliers is critical to successful implementation Progress towards sustainable procurement requires reviewing existing mechanisms and processes: o Adequate training for staff in relation to both commercial and sustainability aspects o Contracts need to reflect both commercial and sustainability objectives as well as long-term orientation o Individual KPIs need to encompass sustainability goals
