Genetic Diseases Autosomal Recessive Diseases – PKU (phenylketonuria) caused by a recessive allele found on Chromosome 12 Causes accumulation of phenylalanine.
Autosomal & Chromosomal Disorders
Human Genetics.
Chromosomes and Human Inheritance  Diploid = 46, Haploid = 23  Sex chromosomes different than others  Not homologous pairs  Female = two X chromosomes.
Mutations Mutation – sudden genetic change (change in base pair sequence of DNA) Can be : Harmful mutations – organism less able to survive: genetic disorders,
DNA Mutations & Disorders
Karyotypes & Disease.
The Human Genome Karyotype  Mapped out picture of chromosomes arranged in their homologous pairs.  46 chromosomes in human genome  23 pairs on karyotype.
Important Genetic Disorders Bio. Definitions ► Autosomes- any chromosome that is not a sex chromosome. Not the “X” or “Y” ► Sex-linked- genes located.
Tracing the Inheritance of the Human Y Chromosome
Genetics. Color Blindness w Occurs more frequently in men w sex-linked (X) w affects light receptors in the eye red/green complete.

1copyright cmassengale. Chromosomes 2 Chromosome Number All cells in the human body (SOMATIC CELLS) have 46 or 23 pairs of chromosomes Called the DIPLOID.
Chromosomes & Karyotypes
Human Heredity Humans have 46 chromosomes –22 pairs of Autosomes (body cells) –1 pair of Sex chromosomes (XX or XY) Chromosomes can be cut up and arranged.
Human Disease through Heredity. Huntington Disease Neurodegenerative Genetic Disorder that affects muscle coordination and some cognitive functions The.
Human Inheritance Chapter 14 sec. 1 and 2. Pedigree Analysis Pedigree = a family record that shows how a trait is inherited over several generations.
HUMAN GENOME VOCAB ONLY. What disorder is it? Mutation in the blood clotting protein makes person unable to stop bleeding after an injury _______________.

JUST DISORDERS. What disorder is it? Mutation in the blood clotting protein makes person unable to stop bleeding after an injury _______________ Mutation.
Other Types of Inheritance Epistasis – one gene affects the expression of another gene – Example: albinism – gene for color and a gene for how MUCH color.
Types of Chromosomes and Human Genetic Disorders Types of Chromosomes Karyotyping Specific disorders.
Human Genetics and the Pedigree. Section Objectives Understand how different mutations occur. Be able to identify different diseases and disorders.
Chromosomal Disorders. Non-disjunction During meiosis, chromosomes are supposed to be divided evenly and into gametes. During meiosis, chromosomes are.
Pedigree definition  Pedigree: a family history that shows how a trait is inherited over several generations  Pedigrees are usually used when parents.
JUST DISORDERS. What disorder is it? Mutation in the blood clotting protein makes person unable to stop bleeding after an injury _______________ Mutation.
Genetics. 1. What chromosomal disorder is caused by a piece being lost? Deletion.
Genetic Disorders & Chromosomal Mutations Chapter 12.
KARYOTYPING AND NON-DISJUNCTION. What is karyotyping? A method of identification of chromosomes Pictures of chromosomes are taken as the cell undergoes.

VII. Genetic Disorders A. Turner’s Syndrome – females w/ only 1 X chr. (XO) Nondisjunction 1 out of 3,000 infertile Short stature Webbed neck

B. Klinefelter’s Syndrome – males w/ an extra sex chromo. (XXY) - Nondisjunction - 1 out of 2,000 births - infertile - lower IQ

C. Down’s Syndrome - (Trisomy 21) – extra 21 st chromo. Nondisjunction mental retardation, muscle weakness, heart defects, short stature 1 in 1,000 when mom is age 15-34, 1 in 400 at age 35

D. Cri du chat - deletion of a segment of DNA in chromo 5. - affects development of larynx - cry sounds like a cat - mental retardation - 1 in 50,000

E. Cystic fibrosis – excess mucus clogs lungs & digestive system autosomal recessive 30,000 people in US Average age 37

F. Sickle Cell Anemia – red blood cells are distorted sickle shape; unable to bind oxygen properly autosomal recessive 1 in 5,000 (1 in 500)

G. Huntington’s Disease – deterioration of brain tissue in middle age autosomal dominant yrs of life after diagnosis

H. Edward’s syndrome (Trisomy 18 )- extra 18 th chromosome Most babies die at death < 10% will live up to 1 year
