Reconstruction Rebuilding Our Nation

Questions: Should the South be punished? What rights do African Americans have? How should the nation be brought back together?

Lincoln’s Plan 10% plan- when 10% of voters in a state vow loyalty to the Union, the state could form a new government and state Constitution that abolishes slavery.

Granted Southern States.. Amnesty or pardons to all white southern except Confederate leaders who vowed loyalty to the Union.

Give African Americans who served in the military The right to vote.

Radical Republicans Thought Lincoln was being too lenient with the South. The South need to be punished!

Wade Davis Bill Majority of whites need to swear loyalty in order to be readmitted. Former Confederate leaders could not hold office. Must create a new state constitution that abolishes slavery

Lincoln refused to sign Wade Davis Bill, feels that it is harsh! Compromise must be reached!

What was the Freedmen’s Bureau?

Lincoln is Assassinated! Andrew Johnson, the vice president, is sworn in as President, and now must Rebuild the Nation!
