Carbon is an ELEMENT Carbon is the BASIS of LIFE on Earth Carbon is found in rocks, oceans, atmosphere, and all living organisms.
Cycle – Repeats Over and Over and Over and Over and Over and Over and Over and Over and Over and Over and Over …
The same carbon atoms are used repeatedly on Earth. They cycle between the Earth and the atmosphere.
These examples are happening at the same time ALL the time.
Plants pull carbon dioxide (CO2) from the atmosphere. Using sunlight with the CO2 they make glucose. This process is photosynthesis. The carbon can be used by the plant (food) and used to build the plant (cellulose). Also gives off CO2 from cellular respiration. Plants Use Carbon Dioxide
Matter and energy are continuously transferred within and between organisms and their physical environment. Living Systems follow the Law of Conservation of Mass and Energy. Matter – Anything that has mass and takes up space. Energy – The ability to do work. Law of Conservation of Energy – Energy cannot be created or destroyed, but it can be transferred or transformed from one form to another. Energy is transformed and/or lost as heat as it passes from one organism to the next but the total amount always stays the same.
