T HE H ISTORY OF H AKA DANCE

T HE HAKA DANCE There is also a divisive new Haka called the Kapa O Pango, It is even more fearsome throat- slitting gesture at the end - but this tends to be set aside for special occasions. The haka that the Kiwis perform is only determined by the leadership group the night before the game.

A BOUT H AKA DANCE The Haka is a composition played by many instruments. Hands, feet, legs, body, voice, tongue, and eyes all play their part in blending together to convey in their fullness the challenge, welcome, or contempt of words.

H AKA D ANCE Haka dance is disciplined and emotional. It is part of Maori culture. The complex dance is an expression of vigor, passion, and identity of race. Haka involves culture, feelings, emotions, and beliefs that is why is not only a special ritual. It is an art where the whole body should speak.

K A MATE, K A MATE Ka mate, Ka mate - the unusual All Black haka – it was poised in the early 19th century by famous Māori warrior chief known asTe Rauparaha, of the Ngāti Toa Rangatira tribe.

'K APA O P ANGO ' Kapa o Pango It was written for the All Blacks by Derek Llardelli. Derek Llardelli was an expert haka composer from the Ngati Porou tribe. It roughly translates as 'All Blacks', and the haka also makes reference to the silver fern, a Kiwi sporting icon.

H AKA PERFORMANCE The decision on which haka is performed before an All Black test is normally made by the team before an event. All Black management articulate it depends on how the team in an event is feeling, and who their opponents are.

Q UESTIONS What is the purpose of Haka dance? When is Haka dance performed? Who should perform Haka and who should not? Why and why not? Why is Haka taught is schools and why is it associated with Rugby? Why are Men, women and children encouraged to participate and experience prestiege and power of the haka dance?
