What can you infer about the influence of the United Nations in the conflict in Syria? Do you feel the United States should be a part of a global group that is viewed in this way?

Governments

Constitutional Monarchy

Constitution = written set of laws Power is shared with a democratically elected group Power is passed down the family line (no elections)

Laws in Britain Any boy under the age of 10 may not see a naked mannequin If someone knocks on your door and requires the use of your toilet, you must let them enter Passing wind in front of the reigning monarch can lead to a charge of treason A pregnant woman can legally relieve herself anywhere she wants – even, if she so requests, in a policeman’s helmet It is illegal to die in the Houses of Parliament

Democracy Right to vote, freedom of speech, and freedom of religion Multiple political parties allowed to exist (Examples: Republican and Democratic)

Shared power Legislative and Executive are elected Judicial is both elected as well as appointed

What amendment of the Bill of Rights is this talking about? How do you personally feel about this amendment? (provide detail)

Theocracy Run by a religious leader who claims to be directed by God No legal separation between church and state Citizens of other faiths are often excluded

Ayatollah Khomeini Led the Islamic Revolution in Iran

You need your notebook and a half sheet of paper The half sheet will be used for the political cartoons and turned in at the end of class

The Soviet Government Deports An Entire Nation Despite the fact that nearly 40,000 Chechens fought for the Soviets in World War II, the government later accused them of helping the Nazis. To punish the Chechen people, the government decided to deport all of them to remote areas of the Soviet Union in freight cars. On February 23, 1944, the entire Chechen population was ordered to local party buildings where they were informed they were being deported for helping the Germans. Anyone who could not be transported for some reason was to be shot immediately. In one such instance, 700 people were locked in a barn that was burned to the ground. Experts believe up to 50 percent of the Chechen population died during the deportation.

Boston Bombers

Bosnian Genocide The fall of the Soviet Union had far-ranging consequences, none more devastating than in former Yugoslavia. Beginning in 1990, the country began splintering into republics, leading to intense ethnic tensions and population displacement. The worst of the crimes occurred in Bosnia with the execution of thousands of Serbs in an attempt to “ethnically cleanse” the area. A measure of peace in the area was finally established in 1995, but only in the wake of more than twenty thousand casualties—most of them the result of executions, fires, rapes, and even public beheadings.
