Baroque Era A Baroque is Portuguese for, “a pearl of irregular shape Opera and orchestra were created and evolved. (Monterverdi opera) It was a time for experimentation with new instruments such as the violin and harpsichord.

Style of Music Homophony – two or more parts move together in harmony – continuo -chords with a melody above Canons and Fugues – imitational polyphony – Canon in D by Johann Pacabel Music is very ornamented and intricate – trills Concerto – solo or small groups perform with an orchestra

Composers in Baroque Era Born in Italy in 1678 died in 1741 at 63 Antonio Vivaldi's nickname was the red priest because of his red hair. Known for his vanity, temper, and obsession with money. He was excused from saying mass because of asthma. Vivaldi received training as a priest in the catholic church. His father was a barber and violinist and his mother was a tailor. He never married but wrote music for a girl’s orphanage. He composed Four Seasons for violin: winter, spring, summer, fall. Antonio Vivaldi

Composers in Baroque Era He was born in Italy in 1653 to a wealthy family His popularity as a violinist was great in his time. History has remembered him as the "World's First Great Violinist" Corelli's mother was left a widow five weeks before his birth and named him after his deceased father. He died a wealthy man in 1713, at Rome at age 59.(Concerto Grosso) Arcangelo Corelli

Composers in Baroque Era Born in Germany in 1685 died in 1759 His father was a barber-surgeon who hated music. Handel was a secretive man, who never married. An ill-tempered person full of resentment and stubborn notions. He was nicknamed “the Great Bear” because of his eating habits and size. He wrote music for royalty. (Royal Fireworks and Water Music). His most famous work is the “Messiah” He was struck by blindness later in life at the height of his popularity. He fainted during a performance of the Messiah and died soon afterward. 3,000 people came to his funeral in England. George Frederick Handel

Composers in Baroque Era Johann Sebastian Bach Born in Germany in 1685 died in 1750 at age 65. Came from 7 generations of professional musicians. When he was only 10 both his parents died leaving him and orphan. He married twice after his first wife died during travel between places. He composed for Prince Leopold, who was a fine music himself. He had twenty children between two wives. He performed best on the organ. (Toccata and Fugue) Spent all his life in Germany though in different cities.

Counterpoint – Musical 3D Puzzle It is hard to write a beautiful song. It is harder to write several individually beautiful songs that, when sung simultaneously, sound as a more beautiful polyphonic whole. The internal structures that create each of the voices separately must contribute to the emergent structure of the polyphony, which in turn must reinforce and comment on the structures of the individual voices. The way that is accomplished in detail is...'counterpoint'. Examples: Double Concerto, Brandenburg Concertos
