 Ghana, Mali & Songhay  What is strange about this label for these kingdoms?

 SSWH6- The student will describe the diverse characteristics of early African societies before 1800 CE.

Refers to the movement of Bantu- speaking people from West Africa to the South & East. These people spread techniques for cultivating plants. They also had the ability to work with iron tools. Swahili is a Bantu language with influences from Arabic.

 1 st of the Sudanic kingdoms to develop  Most profitable economic activity was taxing the gold and salt trade that took place in the kingdom.  Declines because king refuses to convert to Islam.

Mali takes over the gold and salt trade. Sundiata embraces Islam. Timbuktu- major city Famous for schools & universities.

Most famous West African King Ruled Mali Made a Hajj, pilgrimage, to Mecca that took over a year. Stories of his fabulous wealth peaked interest in West Africa

 
