Overview of Maryville Teaching Each day we will include… Content by Min Problem Solving by Angelene and Karen Formative Assessment by everyone

Why Problem Solving? Surveys Mentioned at coaching visits Acuity Testing Encourage using Exemplars which has been purchased for each building Encourage using the Math Solutions website for good problem solving examples Most importantly, a great way to practice skills in a meaningful, purposeful way

How we will approach the instruction… Using the Marilyn Burns’ steps outlined in her book, About Teaching Mathematics. This three part approach can be used when teaching a problem solving lesson or when teaching any math lesson.

The Three Parts Launch Exploration Summarization

The Launch…before we begin Hooking the darlings Vocabulary (academic and non-math) "Foreign" concepts in the problem Prior math needing to be refreshed Connections to other problems Any estimation? Strategies Reading of the problem To them Individually In groups How much do we help? Do we do a short version of the problem with them? Answer statement from Singapore math

The Exploration Do they explore on their own first or in groups? What does the teacher do? What questions/prompts does the teacher give? What do you do with the group that finishes quickly and correctly? How do you differentiate? What do you do with the kids who will not even try? What do you do with the kids who are misbehaving?

The Summary How much time do you allow? How do you use technology? Does everyone share? How do you decide who gets to share? What does the teacher say/ask? Do you have a whole group discussion? How do you teach your students to ask good math questions?

Formative Assessment Each table will be given a large sheet of paper and markers. Divide your paper into two parts and create 2 lists ● Formative Assessments I Use ● Other information about Formative Assessment I would like to know Post your paper on the wall and during the break, check the items you use and check the items you would like to know more about.
