Rationale for Geospatial Skills

Only 37% of young Americans can find Iraq on a map—though U.S. troops have been there since 2003.

Half of young Americans can't find New York on a map.

Rationale Ohio Academic Content Standards Social Studies Indicators for 3 rd, 4 th and 5 th grades demonstrate the high level of expectations for Ohio students concerning geographic and spatial literacy.

Google Earth How does it work? Google Earth combines satellite imagery, maps and the power of Google Search to put the world's geographic information at your fingertips. View exotic locales like Maui and Paris as well as points of interest such as local restaurants, hospitals, schools, and more.

GPS Launch Google Earth and Create a Folder Launch Google Earth Add > Folder Name your folder e.g., Chillicothe Training/location of trip

GPS Fly To a Destination Select the Fly To tab Enter a destination e.g., 8 th Street and Lehigh Avenue, Philadelphia, PA

Insert a Placemark Add > Placemark (or click on the pushpin icon) Name the placemark – e.g., Chillicothe High School Change the Style and Color Choose a different icon type (click on the placemark icon to the right of Name) While the placemark icon is blinking, you can move it around on the screen

Enter Text into Your Placemark Right Click on the placemark icon > Select Properties In the Description box, type your text – e.g., Welcome! Today we are taking a field trip….. Click OK Now, when you click on the placemark icon your text will appear

Add Video Content to Your Placemark Select a video Go to Video Segments Right click on the Play Button (green icon) next to your segment Select “Copy Shortcut”

Create an Image Overlay Go to unitedstreaming and search for images Find an image and click Preview Copy the URL of the image

Create an Image Overlay Add > Image Overlay Give the overlay a name Paste the link (i.e., the URL from your unitedstreaming image) Click OK Resize and reposition the image using the light green anchors

Narrate Your Field Trips Springdoo allows you to create talking s – Set up a FREE account – Record a message – Paste the link (i.e., URL) into the description box of your Google Earth placemark

Organize and Save Make sure everything (i.e., placemarks, image overlays, etc.) is in your folder The order (top-down) is important. First one shows first (e.g., Julia de Burgos Bilingual Middle School goes first) Play the tour Select the folder (e.g., Valley Forge Field Trip) > Save > Save Places As > Select Destination

Other Tools Tools Ruler - Measure the distance between two placemarks Sun and Shadows-show shade and daylight in any area Historical Imagery-Compare place at certain times- before and after an earthquake, global warming Flight Simulator – 01/fly_flight_1549_yourself_in_google.html 01/fly_flight_1549_yourself_in_google.html
