Comparing and Ordering Two-Digit Numbers

I need two volunteers to take a handful of tens and ones blocks from this container. Next, sort the blocks to figure out the two digit number you composed. Now, I need a third volunteer to use blocks to show a number that is 10 more than the greatest number. As a class, lets determine the order of the numbers from greatest to least.

I need three volunteers to select one card from the tens pile and one card from the ones pile to create three two-digit numbers. How can we order these numbers from least to greatest? We could compare the digits in the tens then the ones place to find the greater number.

Does it matter whether you compare the number of tens or the number of ones first? Why? Two-digit numbers can have more ones than another two-digit number but still be of lesser value, for example 29 and 32. Are there any other number you can think of that this applies to? Arrange the three numbers in order from least to greatest focusing on place value.

What do you notice when you read the number line from left to right? Numbers are said in order from least to greatest. Now read the numbers in the opposite direction from right to left. What do you notice? Numbers are now said in order from greatest to least.

Repeat with three new numbers.
