No computationally tractable approach exists. 2

CHC-R 7 th Annual Meeting April 23, 2015 Research Lead  The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill George Mason Effort Promoted the use of subdomain modeling in two projects there: – Hazards SEES Type 2: In Hot Water and Harm’s Way: Modeling to Promote Regional Resilience to Repeated Heat Waves and Hurricanes – Protecting Virginia from Hurricane Storm Surge with Wetlands Ecosystems: Can Nature Help to Reduce Hurricane Flood Risk? The Jeffress Trust Award for Interdisciplinary Research Assisted with installation and use, gave tutorial webinar, etc. 8

CHC-R 7 th Annual Meeting April 23, 2015 Research Lead  The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill ADCIRC Code Base Effort Worked with Jason Fleming to get modifications for subdomain modeling into v51 of ADCIRC trunk, along with documentation Made several adjustments in the process: – Files containing our modifications for subdomain modeling were promoted to modules. – A new input strategy was created using name lists for configuring subdomain models within a fort.15 file. 9

CHC-R 7 th Annual Meeting April 23, 2015 Research Lead  The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill Found and provided fixes for a couple of minor bugs, e.g., that previously caused a phase difference on subdomain boundaries Reintroduced a performance feature based on hotstarting Carried out an extensive set of additional runs combining hurricanes and tides using Hurricane Irene (2011) Improvements underway that allow visualization and comparison of ADCIRC output in the SMT interface Issues Resolved During Transition 10

CHC-R 7 th Annual Meeting April 23, 2015 Research Lead  The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill Testimonials Celso Ferreira has stated that subdomain modeling will allow him to “simulate the effects of local changes without spending the huge computational effort for every scenario.” Bruce Ebersole, USACE New Orleans District, has noted that the use of subdomain modeling yielded “considerable time and cost savings in the calculations” when used in a study on the effect of pumping discharge from the Western Closure Complex on storm surge levels along the downstream communities. 11

CHC-R 7 th Annual Meeting April 23, 2015 Research Lead  The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill Impact Early in this project we identified a critical gap in bringing the science of storm surge modeling to engineering analysis and design, and we have successfully developed and delivered a methodology to achieve that end. We anticipate that the approach will be widely recognized as a key enabler of modern decision support systems for storm surge hazard mitigation. 12
