Freshman Orientation Southwest High School Media Center

Hours 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. At lunch: You may come with a pass. Bookbags Take out what you need, and then place book bags on the shelves on the left side of the front doors.

Quiet! A library is a quiet place to study. If you are doing group work, whisper! If a class becomes too noisy, they will be sent back to the classroom.

Coming to the Media Center You must have a pass to get into the Media Center during class. Give your pass to the students on duty at the Circulation Desk. You may not leave without permission. Ask for a pass! You must leave when the bell rings.

Seriously No gum, food, or drinks in the library. Not even water! Please put trash in the trash cans. It’s a part of Stallion pride to keep things clean and beautiful.

Layout, Etc. Reference books begin on the right side of the first short shelf and proceed on to the wall. Nonfiction begins to the right of the third window and goes on through the tall shelves at the back. Fiction begins on the left side of the second short shelf and goes on throughout the rest of the short shelves. The copier and both printers are behind the Circulation Desk. (No charge for printouts from computer, but do not print unless you absolutely have to.) Turn books in by sliding them in the book drop on the front of the Circulation Desk.

How to Check Out a Book Your NCWise number is your library number. Your school I.D. card will be your library card and lunch card. You should have it with you every day. If your teacher is with you, he or she can verify your identity. You may have two books out at a time. Books are checked out for two weeks at a time.

Fines for Overdue Books 10 cents per day There is a five-day grace period before fines are incurred.  If you have an overdue book or a fine from your previous school or from our school, you may not check out anything else.  Don’t waste your money—turn your books in on time! (Or recheck them.)

Internet You must have an Internet Agreement on file in the Media Center in order to use the Internet anywhere in the school. If you haven’t turned one in, do so today! See Mrs. Roach if you need another copy.

Logging in to a Computer To log in on library and lab computers and some others throughout the buildings, you type in your firstname.lastname. The first time you login, use the word “password” for the password. Then you will be prompted to change your password. Change it to your NCWise number (lunch number). Be sure to log out when finished!

Acceptable Searches On the internet, you may research anything on which you are doing a report or project. Do not use Wikipedia! Most of our teachers will not accept info from there. Use NCWiseOwl and the Discovering Collection as much as possible so that your info is accurate. Stay on task. Don’t look at sites that have nothing to do with your report. Anyone may research colleges, the military, or scholarships, or look at CFNC (College Foundation of North Carolina)

No No No! No , chat rooms, instant messaging No objectionable material No games. No iPods or other music devices. No downloading. When you are finished, leave the computer so someone else can use it.

Money Highlighters…..50 cents CD-R’s…..$1 Note cards…..25 cents for 10 3x5 cards …..$1 for 100 4x6 cards

Read to Succeed! We encourage all of our students to keep library books with them at all times. Reading will improve your grades in all classes and will boost your SAT score. Find books that are interesting to YOU.

Accelerated Reader You may take AR tests whether or not your teachers require them. Some teachers give extra credit for AR tests. We hope to give free food coupons every time you pass a test. At the end of the semester, prizes are given to anyone earning 30 or more points. Those earning 100 points or more in a semester will receive a gift certificate to a local store.
