What are some renewable energy resources?
Earth’s Natural Resources
NONRENEWABLE AND RENEWABLE RESOURCES
NONRENEWABLE AND RENEWABLE RESOURCES. HMMMM.... Energy resources can be classified a renewable or nonrenewable What do you think nonrenewable resources.
Alternative Energy. Fossil Fuels Fossil fuels are a very efficient way to produce energy! However… – Burning Fossil fuels creates POLLUTION. – Coal mining.

Energy The ability to do work or cause changes in matter.
4-1.  *materials in the natural environment that people value and use to satisfy their needs  A. Renewable resources – constantly being regenerated.
The sun is the major source of energy for the earth.
 A SOURCE OF ENERGY is where humans get energy from Example: solar energy, wind energy, oil, etc.
NONRENEWABLE AND RENEWABLE RESOURCES. HMMMM.... What do you think nonrenewable resources are? Break it down... Non? Renewable? Resource?
What is energy? O Energy is the ability to do work. O Just as food gives us energy to focus and play. O Different forms of “natural” energy O potential.

NATURAL RESOURCES materials people take from the natural environment to survive and satisfy their needs.
Alternative Energy = Renewable/Inexhaustible Energy Alternative to what? CoalOil - PetroleumNatural Gas.
Nonrenewable, Renewable, and Inexhaustible
Bellringer Last week we discussed energy sources that we could use for a car: Chemical (gasoline) vs. Light (Sun) Why would using a light source be much.

Energy Resources!. Nonrenewable Resources A resource that forms at a rate that is much slower than the rate at which it is used Fossil Fuels – Formed.
 Any natural substance, organisms, or energy form that living things use  Examples: Tree, Water, Wind, Natural Gas, Solar Energy.
Scientific Method The scientific method is the process that scientists follow when doing experiments.
Alternative Energy Take a look at how electricity is made
Energy Resources A natural resource that can be converted by humans into other forms of energy in order to do useful work.
Energy Resources Energy chains Renewable energy Non-renewable energy
Interacting with our environment
Natural Resources. What are natural resources? Natural resources are items we take from the Earth to use for living. Who makes natural resources? Can.
Natural Resources. Biomass Material from living things, such as plants and animals, that is used as a source of fuel. Electricity generation Refers to.
Energy vocabulary words. Biomass energy: - energy stored in the bodies of living things examples : burning garbage, methane from decomposition/landfills,

Presentation transcript:

The types of energy in our world Energize! The types of energy in our world

Renewable Resource: A resource we get from the earth, that we can run out of, but we can always get more of. Vegetables Fruits Trees Plants Animals

Nonrenewable Resource: A resource we get from the earth, that we can run out of someday. Once these resources are gone, we can NEVER get them back again in our lifetime. Precious gems and minerals Extinct animals/plants Fossil fuels Petroleum oil Natural gas Coal Propane

Fossil Fuels takes millions of years to form (make) animals and plants die and are buried under layers of sedimentary rock Types of fossil fuels: coal natural gas oil Gasoline is NOT a fossil fuel but fossil fuels are used to make gasoline/petroleum

Examples nonrenewable resources

More examples of other types of thermal (heat) energy that do not use fossil fuels

Inexhaustible Resource: A resource we get from the earth, that we will never run out of. Sun Water Wind Dirt

Solar Energy comes from the sun natural resource does NOT cause pollution cheap…sun’s rays are free solar panels can be expensive inexhaustible resource (never used up)

Examples of Solar energy

Wind energy comes from the wind natural resource does not cause pollution cheap, wind is free unreliable because sometimes the wind does not blow wind farms becoming more popular inexhaustible resource (never used up)

Examples of wind energy

Hydro Energy comes from moving water natural resource does not cause pollution cheap, water is free unreliable because sometimes water is not available inexhaustible resource (never used up)

Examples of hydro energy long ago

Static Energy comes from friction manmade and natural does not cause pollution cheap, rubbing 2 surfaces together not powerful enough for human to always use inexhaustible resource (never used up)

Examples of Static Energy sometimes called “static electricity”

Chemical Energy comes from batteries or combustion manmade from natural resources expensive to create causes pollution sometimes If using fossil fuels to make researching new ways to make (wind, water) both inexhaustible and nonrenewable depending on how its made

Examples of Chemical Energy

Batteries

Chemical Energy comes from food that an animal eats from natural resources

Chemical Energy

Geothermal Energy Comes from inside the Earth Heat, steam, and magma found INSIDE the Earth Natural resource Does not cause pollution Free from Earth, materials to get it out are expensive Inexhaustible, but not found everywhere

Geysers (steam)

Biofuels Comes from plants and algae Can come from animals feces Natural resource Does not cause pollution Cheap, but mainly used by farmers Renewable, but can only be used in certain types of engines

(heat energy) Thermal Energy comes from the earth – fossil fuels natural resource decaying/decomposing plants and animals that died MILLIONS of years ago causes pollution expensive to get out of the earth we will run out someday nonrenewable resource (cannot be made)

Examples of Thermal heat using nonrenewable resources

All make electric energy Hydro Thermal Solar ===Wind
