Defining Sense Perception 11 Theory of Knowledge Ms. Bauer

What is sense perception?  “The process by which we can gain knowledge about the outside world” through the physical senses (IB TOK Guide 24)  “The physical responses of our senses to stimuli” (Dombrowski 81)

Our senses…  Give us primary data about the world around us  Are actively selective  o o o  nus nus nus  Require interpretation by other WOKs  Automatic recognition  Patterns give meaning  KQ: Which WOKs make sense of our senses?

Choose Your Own Adventure  Pick a sense. Any sense…  See  rip-rainbow/ rip-rainbow/ rip-rainbow/  Hear   Smell  archives/episode/110/mapping?act=3#pl ay archives/episode/110/mapping?act=3#pl ay archives/episode/110/mapping?act=3#pl ay  Taste  tongues/ tongues/ tongues/  Feel  /entanglement /entanglement /entanglement  Sixth Sense?! 

In your small group… 1. Discuss the podcast or TED talk. What did you learn or conclude about sense perception from the podcast or TED talk? Is sense perception a reliable way of knowing? 1. Discuss how sense perception connects to TWO other ways of knowing. Which comes first? How are they related? Can we use sense perception on its own?
