 Be a native-born U.S. Citizen  Be at least 35 years of age  Have been a resident of the United States for at least 14 years › Meaning if he moved to another country, they would have to have lived in the U.S. for 14 years before becoming President.

 Serves a 4 Year term with a maximum of 2 terms › Franklin Roosevelt was the only President to serve more than 2 terms. Made it to a 4 th term › 22 nd Amendment limited Presidents to 2 terms  President is paid a $400,000 yearly salary

 8 Vice Presidents have taken over after the death of a President  Qualifications are the same as the President  Salary of $208,100  Primary job is to reside over the Senate. › Is not a member, but can vote to break a tie. › Most Vice President’s help the President with foreign policy.

 When the President and Vice President die, the rules of Succession take over › We have never gone past Vice President  Presidential Succession › Vice President › Speaker of the House › President Pro Tempore of the Senate › Members of President Cabinet in order of the creation of the departments

 During war and peacetime, the military ultimately answers to the President  Meets with military leaders to discuss war tactics  Can send forces any where U.S. interests are threatened › Congress has power to declare war › Power is limited by Congress through the War Powers Resolution in 1973  Requires president to recall troops sent abroad within 60 days if Congress does not take action

 Important for a President to have a plan for interacting with other countries of the world  Appoints diplomats to represent the U.S. government in foreign countries › Diplomacy is the art of interacting with foreign governments  Writes Treaties – Peace, Trade, or Alliances  A President is responsible for promoting U.S. foreign interest
