Who invented it?

Yoga began in India more than 5000 years ago. Nobody knows who invented it because it was practiced by people (yogis/ yoginis) long before it was written down. The earliest written record of yoga (and one of the earliest texts in existence) was written by an Indian yogic sage named Patanjali. He wanted to save and make clear the ancient oral teachings of yoga.

So who do we know that does yoga?

Jessica Ennis British track and field athlete. Jessica won a Gold medal at the London 2012 Olympics and does yoga as part of her training to keep her body and mind strong and flexible.

Ryan Giggs. Ryan played for Manchester United and is now Assistant Manager for the team. He began practicing yoga after an injury to stretch and strengthen his hamstring and he now claims yoga to be the reason he managed to play football for so long.

Mrs Kirkwood. Mrs Kirkwood juggles running a busy school office whilst looking after Bertie and Polly and teaching yoga herself. She is Mrs Greer’s yoga teacher too!

Will I be able to do it?

YES. If you can breathe you can do yoga.
