Vocabulary: Wave:Energy:Medium: Mechanical Wave: Transverse Wave Longitudinal Wave

Vocabulary Wave: A disturbance involving the transfer of energy form place to place. Energy: The Ability to do work Medium: The material through a wave travels Mechanical Wave: waves that require a medium to travel. Transverse wave: vibrates the medium at right angles Longitudinal wave: vibrates the medium in the same direction in which the waves travel (parallel)

Discussion All waves transfer energy. A wave starts when energy is used to cause a disturbance in matter What happens if you drop a pebble into a calm pond? What is the medium that the wave travels through?

Teacher Demo We are going to use a string to demonstrate a wave: What is the wave medium? How does this mechanical wave move its medium?

Vocabulary: Amplitude:WavelengthFrequency

Vocabulary Amplitude: The maximum distance the medium vibrates from the rest position. Wavelength: The distance between two corresponding parts of a wave. Frequency: The number of waves that pass a given point in a certain amount of time.

Teacher Demo Speed of wave We are going to use a slinky to help with this as visual Did changing the frequency affect the speed? Did changing the amplitude affect the speed? Did changing the tension affect the speed?
