The Great Awakening 1730’s-1740’s All Men are Created Equal

The Great Awakening A religious revival throughout the colonies

How did it start? Not as many people went to church and some people felt the Anglican Church was corrupt religious leaders were worried about the state of religion in the colonies ( Remember, these were descendants of Puritans, who required people to go to church which could last five hours)

What Happened? Preachers such as Jonathon Edwards and George Whitefield gave sermons across the different colonies. They wanted people to focus more on religion in their daily lives.

The Result focused on a person’s PERSONAL relationship with God Did not focus on church doctrine (beliefs and traditions) Colonists began to see that ALL people are created equal in the eyes of God. These ideas caused people to challenge some Anglican Church teachings

Questions Who is the head of the Church of England? (the Anglican Church) If you challenge the church, who are you challenging? Colonists began to believe that all people were created equal under God, how does this effect a monarchy?

Things to Remember… Colonists saw themselves as English Citizens with the same rights. English citizens had the right to have a voice in their government (Parliament) They also had other rights because of the Magna Carta and the English Bill of Rights. Colonists felt they deserved these rights as well.
