Aim: What is an adjective? What does an adjective modify? Do Now: Write an example sentence that contains an adjective (and circle the adjective). Then, explain how an adjective works (in at least one complete sentence). Mr. Verutes2/1/16 Speech 9

Adjectives Adjectives are one of the eight parts of speech. The eight parts of speech are the basic building blocks of language. Words can be categorized (put into groups) into the different parts of speech according to how they function (work) in a sentence. Words that are adjectives modify (describe) nouns and pronouns.

What are adjectives? Adjectives modify (describe) nouns and pronouns These words are all adjectives – A hot day – A happy camper – A silly song – A big, bloody mess (both “big” and “bloody” modify “mess”) – Karen is creative (“creative” is a subject complement that follows the linking verb “is”) – An interesting course (present participle used as an adjective)

Comparatives and Superlatives Most adjectives (and adverbs) also have a comparative and superlative form Use the comparative form to compare two things Sally is the larger twin. (not largest and certainly not most larger or most largest) Use the superlative form to compare three or more August was the hottest month of the year.

Activity: Adjective Names Consider 1-3 adjectives to describe yourself. The adjective you select must begin with the same letter as your first name. Then, provide a definition for your adjective(s) in your own words. Be prepared to share your adjective name with the rest of class, to explain what your adjective means, and to explain why you chose the adjective that you did. EX: Vociferous Mr. Verutes – loud or loudly forceful Verbose Mr. Verutes – using more words than are necessary
