Classes in Global Competency Graduated from University of Texas in 1974 Unfortunately when Mr. South went to college there wasn’t much focus at all on Global competency and related issues.

Demographic Change Mr. South noted a shift in the kinds of students that he has taught to more diverse groups and more international students.

International Culture Experience Most contact with Eastern European Cultures in his Journalism work Mr. South completed a Eastern European Fellowship in 2007 where he did journalism work for various publications in that area of the world While he was in Ukraine for the Fellowship he wrote a magazine article on the state of the free press in Eastern Europe and former Soviet States

Implications for Journalism The presence of other cultures forces Journalists to think more broadly about their subjects Different viewpoints of minorities are becoming increasingly important Journalists need to deal head on with the language barrier

Implications for Americans Americans need to understand that the rest of the world exists and is very important in our increasingly Global economy Mr. South says “typically Americans don’t care about other cultures, and other cultures just wish to be understood by the Western world”
