Speaking Skills How to Be Persuasive

Is this you when you speak in public: Shaking limbs? Dry mouth? Speak too softly? Speak too fast?

Is this you when you speak in public: Awkward gestures? Body swaying? No eye contact? Monotone delivery?

If so: You have stage fright The only way to deal with stage fright is: PRACTICE, PRACTICE, PRACTICE

Speaking in Debate The goal is to change someone’s mind or way of thinking about a topic Voice and body language are very important

Elements of Persuasion: Body language – proper posture gives the message that you are confident

Elements of Persuasion: Pronunciation – it’s important to pronounce each word Avoid slang Don’t slur words Avoid saying things like “you know”

Elements of Persuasion: Pitch – refers to the highs and lows of the voice. Avoid a monotone.

Elements of Persuasion: Speed About 140 – 160 words per minute is the normal pace for debating Avoid speaking too fast

Elements of Persuasion: Pause – the pause is a critical tool. Use pauses to emphasize a certain word. Pause before and after a word for special emphasis.

Elements of Persuasion: Volume – use with caution. Don’t scream but projecting your voice to the back of the room can be very effective.

Elements of Persuasion: Variance means changing pitch, volume and speed. Never go more than one paragraph without vocal variance.

Strategy Appear truthful Appear committed to your side of the debate Portray yourself as an authority on the topic Don’t be afraid to show emotion
