Greenland

Climate Greenland's climate is arctic to subarctic with cool summers and cold winters. The west coast of Greenland has a warmer climate with summertime high temperatures above 40F. The east coast is colder with varying temperatures and summertime temperatures often below freezing! The inner land is inhospitable with summer temperatures rarely above freezing. Winter temperatures in inner Greenland ranging from -4F to -76°F.

Cultural Groups The population of Greenland is mainly Inuit. These people are similar in beliefs and traditions to the intuits of Canada, Alaska and Siberia. In the outer areas, seal and whale hunting is of great importance. It is the stable income and food supply for one fifth of the Greenlandic population. The intuits believe they should live at one with nature. The hunters live with nature and follow the natural seasons.

Economy The economy of Greenland is based on fishing. Fishing accounts for 95% of all exports of Greenland. Hunting Seal and Whale is very important to the Inuit people. The Greenlandic people are very self dependant, with few imports and exports they mainly provide for themselves. There are not many paying jobs in Greenland. Most people join the fishing industry.

Citizenship The economy remains critically dependent on substantial support from the Danish Government, which supplies about half of government revenues. Greenland has and runs their own government but it is still a Danish country. People of Greenland had a very low standard of living until World war 2. After that, sheep farming was introduced and commercial farming started on a large scale.

Conflicts The biggest conflict in Greenland is when the fishing industry isn't going good as it is the main source of income for the country. There is not a structured road system in Greenland. There are roads in towns but no roads connect different towns.

Land use The land in Greenland is virtually un-usable. Some land that is not permanently frozen is used to grow silage. Greenland does not rely on growing crops or livestock. Though where it is warm enough sheep farming is popular. The little land that is livable contains the islands people. Greenland is the world’s largest island with an area of around 2.2 million sq. km, but only some 410,000 sq. km are not covered by ice.

Geography Greenland is the largest island in the world. It also contains the second largest ice sheet in the world. Greenland has 44,087 km of coastline. The small population is confined to the coastline because of the mass of ice and harsh temperatures that cover the rest of the country.

Geography There is continuous permafrost over northern two-thirds of the island. Most of Greenland is flat, with a gradually sloping icecap. It has a mountainous, barren, rocky coast. There are no lakes or rivers in Greenland. They greatly depend on the surrounding ocean for transportation.

Population The population of Greenland is 56,375. Greenland has a Rapidly growing population with a birth rate of births/1,000 and a death rate of only 7.77 deaths/1,000. The average life expectancy is years. Common languages are Greenlandic, Danish and English.

Interesting Facts The ice is so massive that its weight presses the bedrock of Greenland below sea level and is so all-concealing that not until recently did scientists discover that Greenland might actually be three islands. Television broadcast stations: 1 publicly-owned station, some local low-power stations, and three AFRTS (US Air Force) stations. There is no private right of ownership for land in Greenland.
