Language Our spoken, written, or signed words and the way we combine them to communicate meaning Nature (genes, brain, ability to speak and sign) + Nurture (languages to which one is exposed) = Behavior (mastery of language)

Does language affect thought? Other animals Pigeons, apes, chimps, dogs, pigs, dolphins all display signs of intelligence But do animals have the ability for language? - Need for communication: yes - Words and symbols: yes - Grammar: no Insects communicate through pheromones
