Genetics Poem Project

Sick- by Shel Silverstein   'I cannot go to school today, ' Said little Peggy Ann McKay. 'I have the measles and the mumps, A gash, a rash and purple bumps. My mouth is wet, my throat is dry, I'm going blind in my right eye. My tonsils are as big as rocks, I've counted sixteen chicken pox And there's one more-that's seventeen, And don't you think my face looks green? My leg is cut-my eyes are blue- It might be instamatic flu. I cough and sneeze and gasp and choke, I'm sure that my left leg is broke- My hip hurts when I move my chin, My belly button's caving in, My back is wrenched, my ankle's sprained, My 'pendix pains each time it rains. My nose is cold, my toes are numb. I have a sliver in my thumb. My neck is stiff, my voice is weak, I hardly whisper when I speak. My tongue is filling up my mouth, I think my hair is falling out. My elbow's bent, my spine ain't straight, My temperature is one-o-eight. My brain is shrunk, I cannot hear, There is a hole inside my ear. I have a hangnail, and my heart is-what? What's that? What's that you say? You say today is...Saturday? G'bye, I'm going out to play! '

The Raven—Edgar Allen Poe Watch this poem presented in a Simpson’s Clip While watching, pay attention to the detail and words used in the poem.

The Pitch You have been chosen by a major genetics research company to develop a poem or song that will help convey the message of genetics and use keywords to help inform the public of the importance of genetics.

The specifics You will need to work on this at home, as little time will be given in class. This is one of the last major assignments before grades are due, so don’t procrastinate! Follow the rubric on the instructions to ensure maximum points. Follow the instructions carefully.

Keywords You must have five of the following words in your poem or song: Heredity, phenotype, genotype, allele, homozygous, heterozygous, dominant, recessive, genetics, genes, traits. These words must be used correctly. Extra points are given for each additional word used

How its graded You will be graded on the following criteria: 10 pts Creativity (I want to be wowed) 5pts Originality (The poem or song is your own work and is original) 25 pts Keywords (5pts for each word used correctly) 5pts On Time (the project meets the deadline) 5pts Illustrated (the poem is illustrated, colored, and formatted in a creative way)

Words of Wisdom Do not procrastinate…start today and spend time really putting an effort. This project is worth a lot of points….Dont ignore it Be creative. I want to see how creative you really are Full effort will be rewarded, so put your full effort into this.

Take out a piece of paper Start brainstorming your ideas with your group. You are doing this on your own, but you may get some ideas from your group. On the paper, write out your ideas. Before you leave, I need to stamp this paper.
