Monday, January 4, 2016 Corrections: period, comma in dialogue, quotation marks Mt Whitney Ms. Williams reminded the class is the highest mountain in the continental United States (apart from Alaska).

Quotation Marks Rule: Use quotation marks (“ “) to set off material that represents quoted or spoken language. Periods and commas always go inside quotation marks. Usually, a quotation is set off from the rest of the sentence by a comma. Example:

Tuesday, January 5, 2016 Corrections: pronoun-antecedent agreement, numbers, capitalization, end punctuation wow, the empire state building has 10,000,000 bricks in their structure

Pronoun-Antecedent Agreement Rule: A pronoun is a word used to stand for (or take the place of) a noun. An antecedent is a word for which a pronoun stands. (ante = "before") The pronoun must agree with its antecedent in number.

Wednesday, January 6, 2016 Corrections: using the right word, capitalization The Caspian sea is actually a Lake that lays north of Iran. 6

Using the Right Word Lays/Lies Rule: Lay means to put or set something down. If the subject is acting on an object, it’s “lay.” Lie, on the other hand, is “to be, to stay or to assume rest in a horizontal position,” The subject is the one doing the lying. Example: I lay down the book. You, the subject, set down the book, the object. I lie down to sleep. You are setting yourself down.

Today We Will: Bellwork & Rule Remember: Vocabulary Packets are due tomorrow! January 6, 2016

Thursday, January 7, 2016 Corrections: comma to separate phrases/clauses, subject-verb agreement, comparative/superlative adjective, abbreviation Of all the states in our country AK have the most longest coastline and the smallest population. Corrections: subject-verb agreement, capitalization, spelling The boot of italy looks as though it “kick” the iland of sicily. 9

Abbreviations – States (1 of 2) Rule: Names of states are abbreviated in references and addresses, but not in normal text. Do not use state abbreviations simply to save time or space except in an address on an envelope or list. Do not use periods with state abbreviations.

Comparative/superlative adjectives (2 of 2) Rule: Form the comparative and superlative forms of a one-syllable adjective by adding –er for the comparative form and –est for the superlative. With most two-syllable adjectives, you form the comparative with more and the superlative with most.
