World-leading quality caring and compassionate health services collaborating with patients and everyone working for and with NHSScotland providing a clean and safe care environment improved access and continuity of care confidence and trust in healthcare services delivering clinical excellence

Our approach

Key messages Not ‘just another strategy’ Integrated rather than additional For all of us-NHS, partners and the public Development of Better Health Better Care – not a replacement Underpinned by alignment of policy, planning and performance management

What will it look like? Quality will be at the very heart of our NHS Building on improvements of recent years The very best care possible delivered more reliably and with greater efficiency Stronger focus on what is important to patients and to everyone working with and for NHSScotland Greater involvement of people in the design and delivery of their care

Kotter’s eight steps for successful large scale change Increase urgency Build a guiding team Get the vision right Communicate for buy-in Empower action Create short-term wins Don’t let up Make change stick

What will it take? Leadership at all levels Winning hearts and minds Embedding quality in day-to-day work Creating the infrastructure – people, IT Tying it all together Focusing on outcomes Agreeing the right targets Developing meaningful measures

What will this mean for NHS Boards? Improving quality will be a top priority Quality will be a standing agenda item Boards will assure progress against measures Local Delivery Plans will change to reflect shared objectives on Quality PFPI arrangements will have a focus on quality

What will this mean for patients? A new confidence that their views will shape the way our health services are provided that they will reliably receive the best quality care - safe, effective and built around their needs and a national pride, based on evidence, that our NHS is amongst the very best in the world

What will this mean for the people working with and for NHSScotland? A new confidence that they can make the changes needed to provide the highest quality healthcare that they are valued, their efforts are recognised and they can enjoy what they joined the NHS to do and a national pride, based on evidence, that our NHS is amongst the very best in the world

Next steps Feb and March engagement with NHSScotland - ‘ bottom-up’ approach to implementation - share and spread local innovation and success From Feb 2010 – begin to align the policy, planning, performance management and workforce development around quality April 2010 – public launch of Quality Strategy

Change will not come if we wait for some other person or some other time. We are the ones we’ve been waiting for. We are the change that we seek. Barack Obama
