How to Conduct A Strategic Management Case Analysis Zhiang “John” Lin BPS 4305

What is a Case Analysis and Why? A scientific process of understanding the contexts, rationales, and outcomes of strategic decisions based on relevant management concepts and theories A case analysis allows the simulation and accumulation of real-world experience with manageable cost, while preparing for future strategic decisions It helps us to understand questions like: –Why do some firms succeed and others fail? –What are the unique cultures and capabilities of successful firms? –What are the broad social and economic environments that firms must consider for them to be successful?

Purpose of the case –what is the main point in the case –why interesting Industry analysis –history, customers, competitors, future trend, etc. Organizational analysis –history, product, strategy, structure, financial status, future outcomes Theory and concept application –textbooks, library sources Recommendations for improvement –what are the problems according to theories –how to improve Typical Components of A Case Analysis

Effectiveness in applying strategic concepts and theories Relevance of recommendations and level of theoretical backing Coherence in reasoning throughout the paper –No bullet points Grading Emphases
