Post WWII Germany: Divided into 4 zones. West Germany- United States, Britain, France. East Germany- Soviet Union Soviet Union & United States: Competing ideological systems and each believed the other was a threat to its security. As the cold war continues the tensions between the countries will continue to increase as well

Berlin Blockade: Stalin feels the West is trying to unite Germany again and fears they are going to try and take over Eastern Germany. He blocks off Berlin. The Allies will then do a massive air campaign for a year to drop in supplies. The Truman Doctrine: Designed to contain Communism and stop the spread of Soviet aggression worldwide. The Marshall Plan: Helped restore the Western European economy & keep it from the same chaos that happened after WWI. Korean War: North Korea (supported by the Soviet Union and China) v. South Korea (supported by the United States and the UN). American leaders felt that they had to go in and show that we would continuously resist Communist aggression. General Douglas MacArthur is the commander of the UN troops in Korea. When an armistice is signed at the end of the war Korea is still divided at the 38 th parallel Alliance Systems: Each side competing alliance systems NATO: United States, Canada, and Western European Countries: To Unite Western Europe and halt the threat of Communist Aggression Warsaw Pact: Soviet Union and Satellite Countries: Direct Response to NATO HUAC: House Un-American Activities Committee. Investigated communism (communist sympathies or disloyalty to the United States) in the film industry. McCarthyism: Senator Joseph McCarthy claimed to have a list of Communist that were employed by the U.S. State Department. Making a harsh accusation and having no proof/evidence 2 nd Red Scare: Fear of the spread of Communism. Documents in 1945 show that Soviets have infiltrated the U.S. Government. Venona Papers: Released in 1997 by the NSA. Proved that some Americans in government and in the defense industry had in fact been helping the Soviet Union. Suburbs: A majority of new homes are built in suburbs. This will push for more conformity in the 1950s Arms Race: United States would not share the secrets for the atomic bomb, but the Soviets would still successfully develop their own within 5 years. Americans then felt that they had to come up with a bigger and more intense nuclear weapon (hydrogen bomb). The Soviets would mimic our hydrogen bomb in less than 1 year. Space Race: Using missile launch systems that had originally started to be developed by Nazi Germany the Soviets were able to successfully launch Sputnik (satellite). Fearing that the Soviets had surpassed the United States technologically we will soon launch our own satellites, send a man (Alan Shepard) to orbit, and also be the first to put a man on the moon.
