The Circle of Life In this scene Simba is welcomed into the pride community. There is a summoning, welcoming, and presentation. 1. What role does Rafiki play during this event? 2. What are some of the similarities to the initiation sacraments? What is the importance of having Simba anointed and presented to the community? In the Old Testament, God’s people were anointed by the prophets for a special purpose. David was anointed to serve God’s people as king of Israel. What is the purpose of anointing in the initiation sacraments of Baptism and Confirmation?

Process of Development 1. Why is it necessary for Simba to undertake a self-exploration? 2. What events lead him to maturity? 3. Who are some of the caring, supportive characters who help Simba and how do they give him support? How is moral decision making an important part of your self-exploration? How can the Holy Spirit guide you during this important time? Who are some of the people you rely on to give you guidance and support?

Hakuna Matata A philosophy of “no rules, no responsibilities, no worries.” 1. What happens when Simba escapes into the world of “Hakuna Matata?” 2. What are the benefits to Simba and his friends in living this way? 3. What are the downsides to Simba’s lifestyle? When are you tempted to throw your moral decision making out the window and adopt an “hakuna matata” lifestyle? What are the benefits? Downsides? Who gets hurt?

He Lives in You Rafiki and Nala bring Simba back to reality. Rafiki tells Simba, “You are more than what you have become. 1. How have Simba’s life experiences prepared him for what he has to do to take his place in the pride community? 2. In the last scenes, how does Simba show the strength of his anointing? 3. What effect does this have on his kingdom? Simba’s life comes full circle as he takes his rightful place in the community. Compare this to your full sacramental journey as an initiated Christian. Name some ways your life experiences have matured you over the course of your journey. How has the Holy Spirit been a part of that maturity (or have you done it by yourself)?
