In Two Worlds: A Yup’ik Eskimo Family from the book by Aylette Jennes and Alice Rivers Scammon Bay, Alaska Powerpoint presentation by Carol Harms, JSD 171, Orofino, ID

In this story, the authors compare life as it was for their parents and grandparents to life as it is for people today in the community of Scammon Bay, Alaska.

This nonfiction selection depicts the lives of three generations of a Yup’ik Eskimo family. Life for Alice’s and Billy’s children is different than the way their grandmother, Mary Ann remembers her childhood. Yet, many things have stayed the same.

Traditional passed from one generation to another This student plays a traditional drum, just like his father and grandfather. These girls are performing a traditional dance, just like their ancestors did.

Main Idea and Details Writers often present the main idea of a paragraph in the first or last sentence of the paragraph. This is called the topic sentence.

The other sentences in the paragraph give supporting details.

Compare/Contrast Comparing and Contrasting identifies the similarities and differences between two or more parts of a selection.
