Water Part Two Using the world map, Identify where water is abundant and where it is scarce.

Water’s usability: Can we drink it? List some obstacles or problems in obtaining water from the sources you mentioned earlier. List some obstacles or problems in obtaining water from the sources you mentioned earlier. Can we drink it all? Why or Why not? Can we drink it all? Why or Why not? What can be done to create more drinkable water? What can be done to create more drinkable water?

Water is means of survival. Why is water so important? Why is water so important? What can cause or lead to worldwide water shortages? What can cause or lead to worldwide water shortages?

A TIME OF REFLECTION What do following quotes mean to you personally? How will this effect your life and our country? Do you agree or disagree? " Many of the wars of this [20th] century were about oil, but the wars of the next century will be about water." – Former World Bank Vice President Ismail Serageldin "The next war in the Near East will not be about politics, but over water." - Former UN Secretary General Boutros Boutros-Ghali

GROWING PAINS IN CHINA: Bad as the air can be, lack of clean fresh water presents an even graver threat. Two-thirds of major cities are now seriously short of it, and as many as 700 million people drink water contaminated with human and animal waste at levels that don't come close to the government's minimum standards (also below those of WHO). Most of the 20 billion tons (18 billion metric tons) of raw sewage produced in the cities each year—only 10 percent of which is treated—is dumped straight into rivers and lakes. Peasants who formerly used only human waste (night soil) on their fields now also apply nitrogen and phosphorus fertilizers, with the result that nutrient-laden runoff brews thick algae in rivers, lakes, and canals. Chinese scientists find a link between water pollution and the country's high rates of liver, stomach, and esophageal cancers.

Your turn….. WRITE THEIR OPINION ABOUT WATER USAGE ON EARTH. EXPLAIN HOW THE United States SHOULD OR SHOULD NOT TAKE ADVANTAGE OF THE SCARCITY OF WATER ON EARTH.
